Pamir – The heart of Asia (pt. II)

The Pamir mountains – a vast area located in Tajikistan, Kirgistan and China plays a significant role in shaping all of Central Asia and having impact on habitats hundreds of kilometers away. Together with its neighboring massive mountain ranges such as Tien Shan and Hindukush it was historically a driving factor for steppes and desert to develop. It is home to one of the largest glacial areas of the world and its waters nurture vast areas in Central Asia and once even made it all the way to Aral Sea. Wind and erosion send its tiny grained stones all the way to sandy deserts such as Taklamakan in China and its rugged mountains and valleys are home to many unique wildlife species.

This 2-part series highlights the importance of Pamir and its neighboring mountain ranges on all big biomes of Central Asia with unique wild inhabitants ranging from Snow leopards to Saiga and Manul.
